Climate

The climate is clement throughout the year, being mild in the winter (12 degrees on average in January) and pleasantly hot in the summer (26 degrees on average in July). There are more recorded hours of sunshine in Javea than in any other place in Spain. Indeed the World Health Organization has designated Javea as one of the healthiest climates in the world.

The origin of the town

The ancient town centre displays its mediaeval history through the complexity of its narrow streets and plazas. The white-fronted buildings have large Gothic windows and balconies with wrought iron grilles and Tosca stone. Particularly notable is the 15th century church of San Bartolome which is listed as a national monument. At the side of the church is the market, a beautiful Neo-Gothic building which is constructed on the site of the old Augustine convent and the Town hall, a plain building constructed on a necropolis, thrown into relief by the semicircular arches which also decorate its rear facade. Together they form the historical artistic center of the old town.

A walk through the port

The Port "Duanes de la Mar", born as a fishing community, has been transformed over the years into one of the main tourist centers of the town, with a vigorous service sector surrounding the marina. From the heart of the fishing quarter rises majestically, the avant-garde structure of the church of Our lady of  Loreto. A stroll through the port can be a true delight if taken at the time of the fish market, which coinsides with the late afternoon arrival of the fishing boats accompanied by the ever boisterous seagulls.

Sun, sand and sea at the Arenal

Following the road from Javea to the Cape of la Nao one reaches the Arenal beach which is situated in the center of the bay. The beach is without doubt the best known and most visited by bathers. The Arenal offers sun, sand and sea, which dominates much of the Costa Blanca and caters for the holiday maker. In spite of the urban pressure, the Arenal preserves a general harmony with its apartment blocks of limited height and well structured roads. Along the promenade there is a commercial leisure complex neve center of the area especially during the summer months. Summer nights on the Arenal are extraordinarily bustling and lively, the usual meeting point for people around the shops, bars and restaurants.

A privileged place for sports

Javea is a privileged area for sports. The sea and its coasts lined with cliffs, breakwaters, small islands, coves, beaches of sand or pebbles, sea beds with crystal clear waters, allow an infinite number of possibilities for water sports such as sailing, windsurfing, diving, underwater fishing, all along its twenty five kilometers of coast with its incomparable  beauty. The calm waters of the bay invite one to swim or water ski. fishing is another sport for which Javea is a natural paradise. The modern Club Nautico is the centre for many of these activities. Other sporting interests are also catered for in and around Javea by various sports clubs and associations, for example, tennis, horse-riding, mountain-climbing , cycling, cricket, bowls, and even shooting. Javea´s golf club, surrounded by pine trees and orange groves is a mere 6km from the centre of town.

The best rice and fish dishes

Dining Out is also a popular pastime in Javea. In addition to exciting international cuisine, local traditional fare such as the famous Spanish rice dishes and freshly caught fish are widely and economically available in Javea´s restaurants of which there are literally hundreds, some nestling within the town or port areas and others overlooking the Mediteranean .

Tourism

Although tourism is important in Javea it´s not of the package-holiday style. there are very few hotels (although there is a National Parador) most of the tourists preferring to stay in villas or apartments.

Because of the benign nature of tourism, the local Spanish population have extended their warmth and welcome to both the tourists and to the many people who have taken up permanent residence in this very special location. Javea remains a working town, port and countryside.
